Abstract:
Echinococcosis/hydatidosis is a zoonotic disease. The disease is caused by adult worms and larval (metacestode) stages of the taeniid cestode Echinococcus granulosus. The life cycle is completed into two hosts. The final host usually carnivore e.g. dog and the intermediate host usually herbivorous and man. The aim of the study is to evaluate the serodiagnosis circulating hydatid antigen in sera for the diagnosis of hydatid disease by counter-currentimmunoelectrophoresis (CIEP) in man. Material and methods: Acrosssectional study was done in biological material (the fluid from human hepatic and lung of hydatid cysts). The viability criteria used were ovoid form invalidated scolices and intact calcareous corpuscles. The presences of vibrating movements, and the absence of “vital” staining, the cysts were different grouped in diameter cysts from small cysts to very large size of cysts. Descriptive statistics for the calculation of the prevalence of fertility, analytical statistics for comparison of groups, and multivariate analysis for examination of the association between cyst fertility and clinical variables. Results: CIEP test is summarized in table 1. Circulating antigens were detected in sera of 17 surgically aspiration confirmed cases, 5 positive cases and 12 and 54 serum cases which were clinically diagnostic. And the precipitate line in the figure 1 and 2 were stronger positive by CIEP. Conclusion: Counter-current immunoelectrophoresis (CIEP) was standardized and evaluated to demonstrate circulating hydatid antigen in sera for the diagnosis of hydatid disease. The test is moderately sensitive and it could detect circulating antigen in of surgically proved and 100% ultrasound proved hydatid disease cases. It is highly specific and no false positive reactions were observed with the sera from diseased or healthy control.
