Abstract:
This paper presents a review on a contemporary mode of Transportation system called Personal Rapid Transit. In the present world the urban areas are increasing rapidly and the introduction of new technological innovations in all the areas is making the lifestyleeasier at the same time throwing new challenges tourban transportation. With the urban population being increased rapidly and the land availability being the same it has been challenging to the planners and engineers to provide more comfortable life within the available area. On the other hand, where fuel and environment have become a major concern a new mode of transportation is very much needed such that it is eco-friendly, fuel efficient, safe andaccident-free. Particularly in the field of transportation, a new era has started with the automation. Personal rapid transit (PRT) in a new mode of a transportation system which is fully automated with less infrastructure and offers less waiting time, direct origin to destination without any intermediate stops which is eco-friendly and runs on specific guideways. PRT provides a high level of reliability and comfort. This paper describes the growth of PRT from the past years and present status of PRT, comparisonwith the conventional transportation systems and area of applications.
