Abstract:
Gayet-Wernicke encephalopathy is a deficiency encephalopathy causing damage to the hippocampo-mammillothalamic network (Papez circuit). It is a very rare but serious neurological emergency due to thiamine (vitamin B1) deficiency. It is frequently encountered in heavy drinkers of alcohol (1,2), but can sometimes be found in other diseases such as chronic gastritis, inflammatory bowel disease and repeated vomiting. The diagnosis is made by a triad of symptoms namely, ophthalmoplegia, ataxia, mental confusion, and can be confirmed by brain MRI and thiamine assay B1. We report a case of Gayet-Wernicke encephalopathy complicating severe vomiting during pregnancy
