Abstract:
The main objective of the study was to explore the interpretational authenticity of speaking skills tests at Addis Ababa Science and Technology University (AASTU). The study employed mixed methods research design, in which qualitative and quantitative data gathering and analysis methods were employed. 288 first-year AASTU students filled in the survey; 11 students sat for focus group discussion (FGD; and eight teachers were interviewed. The findings of the study revealed that both the individual and group speaking skills tests at AASTU did not share interpretational authenticity attributes. It was also found that the teachers were more critical of their own tests than the students.
