Abstract:
Urinary schistosomiasis is a parasitic disease caused by blood flukes of the genus Schistosoma and acts as the second major source of morbidity and mortality in tropical and subtropical countries. The disease was reported in some cases by physicians in Merowe Locality. The study aims to determine the prevalence rates of urinary schistosomiasis among schoolchildren in Merowe Locality, Northern State, Sudan. A Cross-sectional survey was carried out from September 2019 to February 2020 in twenty basic schools in Merowe Locality. The age of schoolchildren ranged between 6 and 13 years. 1557 urine samples were collected and processed using different techniques (direct microscopy and concentration techniques). SPSS (v 21.0) was used for data analysis. The overall prevalence of urinary schistosomiasis in selected students was 1.03% with the higher infection among male students between 9 - 12 years who were active in swimming and working in the fields. Most of the pupils interviewed were found to be unaware of the disease. The findings show the need for an integrated control program against growing up urinary schistosomiasis including the treatment of all infected children and the implementation of a health education program.
