Abstract:
Simultaneous bacterial and viral meningitis is a rare entity especially in immunocompetent patients. We report a case of an infant with concurrent Streptococcus pneumoniae and Cytomegalovirus meningitis. The diagnosis of the second disease was delayed, we speculate that Streptococcus pneumoniae meningitis was the cause of the clinical presentation and that all subsequent mild features were those of a milder disease. This justifies the importance of exploring for concomitant infection, even when the primary diagnosis is confirmed. The aim of our observation is to elucidate the possibility of a simultaneous bacterial and viral neuro-invasive infections.
