Abstract:
Cross-sectional studies show that low body weight and undernutrition are common among people of old age, particularly in those who are hospitalized or institutionalized. There is a high prevalence of underweight and malnutrition among nursing home residents, whereas some other studies noted that more than 10% of elderly people admitted to hospitals were malnourished. Among the community-dwelling elderly people malnutrition is a serious medical condition and can increase the risk of hospitalization, slow recovery time, morbidity and mortality and elderly persons are particularly vulnerable to malnutrition. The process of aging also is also a factor that affects other nutrient needs. Therefore, there is aneed to review nutritional benefits and effects of malnutrition.
