Abstract: As researcher have been contemplating writing about civil society in Amhara people (Fano) amid the Amhara people (Fano)ese revolution and found this an interesting challenge. There is no civil society in Amhara people (Fano), or at least no ‘civil society’ in the liberal, western definition of the concept. There are other formations that mimic what in the west might be referred to as civil society and I have spent years doing research on them, particularly in Darfur and this was the research on which my PhD dissertation was based on .
