Abstract:
Chronic abdominal pain can have multiple aetiologies, and a rigorous diagnostic approach will, in the vast majority of cases, lead to an aetiological diagnosis. Ileo-colonoscopy is one of the key complementary examinations for the etiological diagnosis of chronic abdominal pain. In our study, colonoscopy was diagnostic in almost 13% of TFI patients, and in 45% of patients with abdominal pain associated with an alarm sign. Abdominal pain, probably of functional origin, remained unexplained by an organic colonic cause in 86.67% of the cases in the 1% group, but the contribution of colonoscopy remains considerable in the assessment of chronic abdominal pain with an alarm sign. According to the results of our study, the risk factors for organic disease and which militate against a diagnosis of irritable bowel are male gender, recent onset of a warning sign, weight loss, bloody stools, and blood test abnormalities (anaemia, hypoalbuminemia, high sedimentation rate).
