Abstract:
Thoracolumbar fractures are a public health problem because of their frequency and sequelae risk, particularly neurological, correlated with increasing age and incidence of osteoporosis. The annual incidence is 0.9% with a prevalence of 5% to 10% in women of average age 50 to 60 years, and an incidence of 1.7% and a prevalence of more than 30% in people aged 80 years and over. These fractures most commonly affect men between the ages of 20 and 40 at the transition zone between T11 and L2 due to the specific biomechanics of this segment with a lifetime average cost of approximately $2.5 million per patient. Management can be functional, orthopedic or surgical. Complications such as paralysis and deformity can occur and limit the daily activities of these patients or make it difficult to return to work due to chronic pain.
