An Examination of Nigeria's Legal and Policy Frameworks for the Sustainable Development of The Marine Environment Download PDF
Amade Roberts Amana PhD, BL

Abstract:
The sustainable development of the marine environment and the rational exploitation of its resources are peremptory concerns for Nigeria today. Rapid declines in the resources of the zone constitute a constant reminder of the alarming proportions of the damage already inflicted. Industrial development, particularly in the petroleum and manufacturing sectors coupled with efforts to satisfy the increasing need for food are taking a huge toll on the integrity of the ecosystem. Industrial discharges have resulted in the contamination of water bodies and the destruction of aquatic life. More often than not, governmental agencies have been entrusted with the regulation of the environment under statutory authority, but environmental protection requires the synergy of both statutory and common law instruments. Public institutions and private persons have pivotal roles to play in the enforcement of the regulatory framework.
