Abstract:
This study aims at providing an overview of the interpreting market in Burkina Faso. The objectives are to determine the organization of this market, to identify the needs intrinsically linked to the market and to propose solutions to improve the interpretation profession in Burkina Faso. To achieve these objectives, a mixed method was used to collect data. Thus, these data were collected through 52 questionnaires administered to interpreters and users of interpretation services and semi-structured interviews with some members of the Association of Interpreters and Translators of Burkina Faso (AITF). The data was analyzed and interpreted using pie charts, frequency counts and syntheses. Findings reveal that the interpreting market in Burkina Faso is not well organized. There is no harmonization on interpretation time, fees and the number of interpreters in the booth, in a market dominated almost equally by natural interpreters (45%) and professionals (55%). Among the challenges, there is a glaring lack of interpretation equipment such as soundproof booths, and most interpreters (74.5%) are not always trained according to the existential needs of the market, especially with the advent of new information and communication technologies. It equally appears that the profession is not known to the public, which hinders its flourishing. The study therefore recommends that AITF should make the profession known to the public, especially because only interpreters can promote their profession.
