Abstract:
In the workplace, discrimination is becoming prevalent and it is detrimental to enterprise and could affect the level of commitment of employees at work, hence necessitating this study that determined the relationship between workplace diversity and employee performance but specifically examined the influence of ethnicity on employee's commitment in banks in Delta State. This study employed a descriptive survey research design. The research population comprised all workers of Deposit Money Banks in Asaba, Delta State, totalling 353 individuals, as recorded from the sixteen banks under examination. Complete enumeration was employed for the study due to the population being deemed manageable. The data collection instrument employed was a Likert Scale questionnaire, which underwent validation through face and content validity, as well as reliability assessment via the Cronbach Alpha method, yielding a coefficient of 0.876, deemed sufficiently high and exceeding the widely accepted threshold of 0.6. The collected data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics with hypotheses tested at a 5% level of significance. Findings revealed that ethnic diversity has a statistically significance influence on employee commitment (R = 0.929; R2 = 0.863; F-statistic = 331.601; t = 28.579; P-value = 0.000 < .05). The study concluded that ethnic diversity is a significant factor in influencing employee affective commitment. Based on the findings, the study recommended that the banks need to give priority to employees on training needs, fringe benefits and incentives not based on ethical consideration but based on merit.
