Abstract:
This study explored the impact of substance abuse on the academic performance of university students at Kampala International University in Kampala District, Makindye Division, Uganda. Substance abuse among students is a significant concern globally, with potential detrimental effects on their academic achievements and overall well-being. The research employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to provide a comprehensive understanding of the issue. Quantitative data were collected from 160 university students using structured questionnaires, while qualitative insights were gathered through semi-structured interviews with 20 students who self-identified as substance users. The study examinesd various substances, including Khat (Mira), tobacco, and marijuana, and their specific effects on students' academic performance. Findings indicated a strong negative correlation between substance abuse and academic performance. Students who abuse substances show lower academic achievement, with significant impacts on their ability to concentrate, manage time, and complete assignments. The study also highlights how substance abuse contributes to increased absenteeism, decreased motivation, and higher levels of stress. The research underscored the need for targeted interventions, including enhanced awareness programs, counseling services, and stricter regulations on substance use within the university environment. Recommendations for future research includes longitudinal studies to track the long-term effects of Marijuana abuse on academic performance and the effectiveness of intervention strategies. By addressing the impact of substance abuse on academic performance, this study aimed to contribute to the development of effective support systems and policies to improve student outcomes at Kampala International University and similar institutions.
