Abstract:
The study investigated the impact of biology practical on the acquisition of Science Process Skills among biology students in Taraba state, Nigeria. The population of the study consisted of 2,827 secondary schools, (SS2) two biology students. A sample of (110) SS2 students was used for the study. The study was carried out in Jalingo Education Zone of Taraba State. This research work adopted a quasi-experimental research design involving pretest, posttest and post-posttest experimental group design. One research Question and one null hypothesis were formulated, one instruments; Science Process Skill Acquisition Rating Scale (SPSARS) was used for data collection. The items of (SPSARS) were subjected to content and face validation. The reliability of the instruments was established using Cronbach alpha and a reliability coefficient of 0.84 was obtained. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research question while Analysis of Covariance was used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. From the analysis, it was revealed that the acquisition of science process (observation, drawing, experiment and measurement) in Biology using Science Process approach was higher than those taught using Alternative to practical Method. It is evident from this study that the use of Science Process approach could enhance in students' the acquisition of science process skills. It is recommended based on the findings of this study that: Biology teachers should be encouraged to adopt Science Process approach while teaching Practical Biology. Workshops and seminars should be organized for Biology teachers to motivate them incorporate new teaching strategies like Science Process approach in the teaching and learning of practical Biology which is known to promote the acquisition of science process skills.
