Abstract:
With the sudden rise in artificial intelligence, education, and ýacademia will never be the same, opening up new ways and challenges to misconduct and fraud prevention. While AI tools from plagiarism detectors and automatic graders enhance the integrity and efficiency of academic research, their content creation capability and the potential for misuse raise ethical concerns. This paper has discussed the role of AI from both perspectives of contribution and ethical challenge towards academic integrity. The key integrity provided by AI-enabled tools relates to detecting plagiarism, monitoring online exams, and guaranteeing the transparency of research. On the other hand, students misusing AI-generated essays and using AI as a tool to accomplish academic tasks constitute challenges to principles of integrity. While these AI-powered tools, on the one hand, work towards preserving integrity through plagiarism detection, online proctoring in exams, or fostering research transparency of associated content, on the other hand, students' excessive use of AI-written essays and their heavy dependence on AI to do academic work violate the values of originality and truthfulness. Furthermore, biases in AI systems and excessive use of AI in research exacerbate the situation. To tackle these problems, academic institutions need to implement AI usage policies and guidelines. This paper has investigated the effects of AI on creditability and transparency in scholarship and academic research by examining up-to-date intellectual resources, in addition to the insights of other scholars.
