Abstract:
The small pelagic fishery, locally known as uvuvi wa dagaa, plays a significant role in supporting livelihoods, ensuring food security, and contributing to the economy of Zanzibar. Anchovies (dagaa), a key component of this fishery, provide employment opportunities for men and women along the value chain, including fishing, processing, and trade. This study aimed to examine the anchovy value chain, identify its challenges, and assess the roles of various actors, particularly women, in anchovy processing. Conducted between January 2021 and December 2022, the study focused on key processing sites in Unguja, Zanzibar, using both qualitative and quantitative methods.
