Abstract:
This study aimed to ascertain the effectiveness of Cartoon Stories as an intervention material to improve the reading comprehension skills of Grade 5 pupils in Lias Elementary School for the school year 2021-2022. The study utilized a quasi-experimental design, specifically the one-group pretest-posttest involving 25 frustrated readers who were identified based on their PHIL-IRI Oral Reading Test results. Pupil-respondents were exposed to the intervention material made of Cartoon Stories that offered visual and printed presentations of stories to enhance the cognitive resources of the respondents, particularly in reading. The study revealed that there was a significant improvement in the pupils' scores in reading comprehension after exposure to the intervention as manifested in the associated p-value of .000, which is less than alpha .05, and in the increase of pretest and posttest mean scores of 5.08 and 13.64, respectively. In light of the findings, the researchers recommended that teachers utilize Cartoon Stories as an intervention material to improve the pupils' reading comprehension skills. Using them could help learners concretely and visually understand the meaning of the concepts or selections being taught, gearing towards enhancing their comprehension skills effectively.
