Abstract:
'Diversity' is a critical aspect of human existence and its relevance in our educational systems cannot be overemphasised. Moreover, the concept of diversity holds a range of meanings in different contexts and continues to assume multiple dimensions worthy of review of the pertinent academic literature. In this review article, we sought to provide an exposition of the concept of diversity in higher education. In particular, this review started off by conceptualizing diversity in reference to the varied definitions, associated nomenclature and its relevance to education. Additionally, the challenges and barriers to diversity, with some notable initiatives to promote same as well as its impact on higher education have been highlighted. Finally, some future directions and emerging trends are offered for consideration.
