Abstract:
The integration of psychotherapy into medical diagnosis and care has increasingly become a focal point in contemporary healthcare, reflecting a holistic approach that considers both mental and physical well-being. This review provides a comprehensive examination of current practices, theoretical frameworks, and empirical research concerning the incorporation of psychotherapy into medical settings. By exploring the biopsychosocial model and patient-centered care model, this review highlights the theoretical foundations that support the integration of mental health services with traditional medical care. These frameworks emphasize the importance of addressing psychological and social factors alongside biological ones to achieve optimal patient outcomes. The review details the benefits of integrated care, including significant reductions in healthcare costs, improved management of chronic conditions, and enhanced patient satisfaction and adherence to treatment plans. It also identifies key challenges to widespread adoption, such as logistical barriers in coordinating care, financial constraints related to insurance coverage, and resistance due to the stigma associated with mental health treatments. Looking forward, the review underscores the need for further research to develop and test new models of integrated care, identify best practices, and address implementation barriers. Policy development is also crucial to ensure adequate funding and insurance coverage for psychotherapy services, which will make integrated care more accessible and effective for a broader population. The review concludes that integrating psychotherapy into medical care holds promise for improving patient outcomes and enhancing the overall quality of healthcare by adopting a more comprehensive and inclusive approach to treatment.
