Abstract:
This study examines the role of mass media in shaping public opinion on corruption in Nigeria. The study made use of a survey research design. The population of this study are media professionals from Nigeria Union of Journalists, Abuja Chapter. A total number of 160 respondents were selected using cluster sampling. The instrument for data collection was a questionnaire designed by the researcher and data analysis was done using both descriptive and inferential statistics. The result of the finding showed that media acts as a watchdog, holding those in power accountable by investigating and reporting misconduct (X = 2.64, SD = 1.53) and media coverage can influence policy change by bringing attention to corruption and its impact (X = 2.33, SD = 1.04). The result of the hypothesis showed that mass media significantly influenced public awareness on corruption [(R2 = .085; F (1, 159) = 14.704; p < .05)] accounting for 8.5% of the variance observable in public awareness on corruption. The study recommends the need to advocate for stronger legal protections for journalists covering corruption, such as anti-harassment laws and press freedom guarantees.
