Abstract:
This study explored the causes and implications of terrorism in Nigeria, with a focus on the rise of Boko Haram and the socio-political and economic factors that have contributed to its emergence. Nigeria's historical context, marked by ethnic, religious, and regional divisions, political corruption, and economic inequality, has created fertile ground for extremist groups to exploit disillusionment and instability. The study identifies key causes of terrorism, including economic inequality, weak governance, religious and ethnic divisions, regional instability, and global dynamics. It further highlights the far-reaching implications of terrorism, such as the humanitarian crisis, economic disruption, political instability, and regional insecurity. The study also examines the erosion of public trust in government institutions and the international dimension of the security challenges, with implications for Nigeria's foreign relations and global energy markets. Based on these findings, the study recommends targeted economic interventions, improved governance, enhanced regional cooperation, and strengthened border controls to address the root causes of terrorism and promote national stability.
