Abstract:
This study explores the relationship between historical trauma, socioeconomic status (SES), peer influence, and substance abuse among adolescents in marginalised communities in Ibadan, Nigeria. A descriptive research design was employed, utilising purposive and snowball sampling techniques to select 80 adolescents from four communities. Data were collected through structured questionnaires. The study found significant correlations between historical trauma, socioeconomic status, and peer influence with adolescent substance abuse. Historical trauma was identified as the most influential factor, emphasising the lasting impact of past experiences on current behaviour. These findings contribute to understanding how these factors collectively influence substance use behaviours in marginalised populations, providing a basis for targeted interventions to support at-risk adolescents.
