Abstract:
This study explores the historical, cultural, and contemporary dimensions of Islam in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in response to the stigma linking the religion to the actions of armed groups, particularly the ADF-NALU. By tracing the history of Islam, introduced by Swahili merchants in the 19th century, it highlights the contributions of Muslims to social cohesion, commerce, and the region's cultural richness. The analysis reveals the strategic instrumentalization of religion by the ADF, which employs pseudo-religious rhetoric to justify political and economic objectives that are disconnected from local Muslim communities. Muslim communities in eastern DRC face unjust stigmatization, leading to discrimination, hindering social integration, and exacerbating intercommunal tensions. Despite these challenges, these communities play a key role in conflict mediation, education, and promoting peace. Meanwhile, local and international initiatives, including educational programs and interfaith dialogues, work to dismantle prejudices and highlight the Islamic heritage. These efforts are crucial to correcting biased perceptions and strengthening social cohesion. The study calls for a nuanced and evidence-based approach to dissociate Islam from the actions of armed groups and restore the image of Muslims in the DRC. It proposes sustainable strategies such as valuing Islamic historical narratives, promoting inclusive policies, and strengthening academic collaborations. These actions aim to build a society where Muslim contributions to culture, peace, and development are fully recognized and integrated.
