Abstract:
: Globalisation and digital technologies are transforming professions, including that of translator in Benin, a multilingual country where more than 50 local languages coexist with French, the official language. In this context, translation plays an essential role in ensuring linguistic inclusion, inter-ethnic communication and international integration. With the emergence of technologies such as machine translation based on artificial intelligence, professional practices are changing, raising both challenges and opportunities. This article analyses these changes, explores the impact of digital tools and proposes strategies for a sustainable future for translators in Benin. To achieve these objectives, a mixed-methods approach was adopted. The study was carried out using 60 questionnaires sent to translation professionals by two means: online (email) and by telephone call. Semi-structured interviews were also conducted. The hypotheses put forward assume that translators in Benin face challenges such as a lack of training and adequate equipment, and that computer-assisted translation (CAT) software such as SDL Trados and MemoQ would make it possible to manage complex projects while ensuring terminological consistency and productivity. This research is based on the theory of socioconstructivism by Lev Vygotsky (1934) and the acquisition of translation skills (ACT) approach developed by George D. Kuh.
