Abstract:
This study explores the influence of peer pressure and family structure on substance use among teenagers in Lagelu Local Government Area (LGA), Nigeria. Using a correlational research design, data were collected from 80 teenagers through structured questionnaires. The results revealed a significant positive correlation between peer pressure and substance use, and a negative correlation between family structure and substance use. Peer pressure emerged as the strongest predictor of substance use, followed by family structure. Regression analysis showed that both factors significantly explained 34.1% of the variance in substance use. These findings suggest that peer influence plays a more substantial role in encouraging substance use, while stable family structures provide a protective buffer. The study recommends the implementation of peer resistance programmes and the strengthening of family support systems to mitigate substance use among teenagers. Further research is suggested to examine additional factors and explore intervention strategies.
