Abstract:
Conjunctival squamous cell carcinoma (CSCC) is a rare tumor that most commonly affects elderly individuals, with no sex predominance. We report the case of an 86-year-old female patient who presented with a painful red eye that had been evolving for four months. Examination of this eye revealed chemosis and diffuse conjunctival hyperemia, purulent secretions, and a poorly defined reddish, budding conjunctival lesion at the inner canthus. An initial conjunctival biopsy was performed, with results suggestive of seborrheic keratosis without signs of malignancy. Given the clinical criteria suggestive of the obvious malignant nature of the lesion, a second conjunctival biopsy was requested. The histopathological result favored a well-differentiated infiltrating and keratinizing squamous cell carcinoma. The diagnosis of conjunctival squamous cell carcinoma should be considered in any suspicious conjunctival lesion characterized by its budding and poorly defined appearance, its painful nature, and its rapid growth. Careful surgical excision of the tumor should then be performed, followed by histopathological examination which alone can guarantee a definitive diagnosis.
