Abstract:
The objective of the present study was to synthesize MgO nanoparticles via biological method using aqueous solution of Cucumis sativus fruit as a reducing agent with magnesium nitrate as precursor. The germination percentage, root and shoot length of peanut (Arachis hypogaea) seed was tested. Fruit of Cucumis sativus extract was successfully used as a reducing agent for the synthesis of MgO nanoparticles. The UV-Vis spectrum confirmed the presence of MgO nanoparticles at a wavelength of 266.5 nm. The functional groups analysis of the nanoparticles were confirmed by FT-IR analysis. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed highly crystalline nature and morphology of MgONPs respectively. In addition, seed germination and seedling growth of peanut (Arachis hypogaea) were investigated in different concentration (0.0, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75 and 1.00 g/l) of the nanoparticles. The result showed improved seed germination of peanut (Arachis hypogaea) as concentration increases as compared to control while root and shoot length both decreases with increase in the concentration. The result indicated that MgONPs has a promising effect on the germination and seedling growth in peanut (Arachis hypogaea)
