Abstract:
Participatory budgeting is a democratic innovation that involves citizens in the budgeting process, ensuring that resources are allocated in a way that reflects community needs and priorities. This article explores the benefits and challenges of participatory budgeting, highlighting its potential to increase citizen engagement, transparency, and accountability in public sector budgeting. Through a review of case studies and literature, we demonstrate the effectiveness of participatory budgeting in improving budgeting outcomes and enhancing citizen trust and engagement. We call on public sector organizations to adopt participatory budgeting approaches, promoting a more inclusive, and transparent, and accountable public sector budgeting process.
