Abstract:
This study investigated the role of the Port Health Office (PHO) at the Rusumo One Stop Border Post (OSBP), Tanzania, in reducing treatment costs through preventive health measures and timely interventions. Using a mixed-methods approach, including qualitative interviews and quantitative analysis of health data, this study explored the perceptions and experiences of stakeholders regarding the PHO's impact on healthcare economics. Interviews with healthcare providers, border officials, and community members provided insights into the effectiveness of PHO interventions in lowering treatment costs, improving health outcomes, and enhancing public health preparedness. Findings revealed a predominantly positive perception of the PHO's contributions, with stakeholders acknowledging the role of preventive measures in averting health crises and reducing the need for costly medical interventions. However, challenges such as operational efficiency, resource constraints, and community engagement emerge as areas needing improvement to maximize the PHO's impact. Recommendations include enhancing collaboration between healthcare providers and PHO personnel, strengthening disease surveillance systems, and investing in technological innovations to optimize health service delivery at border crossings.
