Abstract:
This research discusses Mohammad Hatta's views on the concept of popular democracy and nationalism from 1945 to 1956. The research objectives include: (1) analyzing the background of Mohammad Hatta's views on popular democracy, (2) analyzing the views of several important figures on democracy, and (3) analyzing Mohammad Hatta's views on national democracy. The research method used consists of five steps: topic selection, heuristics, criticism, interpretation, and historiography. The results show that the conception designed by Hatta, namely the populist democratic system, is a way to improve conditions for Indonesian society. Hatta did not fully embrace Western-based democracy, which in practice served feudal interests. Even when considering historical contexts, he rejected democracy that served the interests of oppressing other groups. This interpretation remains relevant, even though post-reform democracy has not fully reflected true democracy.
