Abstract:
Current advancements in healthcare service provision have entailed the adoption of electronic health records (EHR) systems. Comprehensiveness is essential for the successful adoption of EHR systems. As such, stakeholders in the healthcare industry need to determine the critical factors necessary for implementing EHRs. This systematic review aimed to identify the essential factors that lead to successful EHR implementation in organizations and their impact on patient admission efficiency and outcomes. A search was conducted using the CINAHL and PubMed academic databases concerning the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyse (PRISMA) guidelines. This review included 18 articles selected through rigorous screening criteria. This review resulted in extracting five themes associated with the research question. These themes included increased accuracy and efficiency after the application of EHRs (89%), the importance of access to technology and funding for successful implementation of EHRs (61%), improved patient involvement and outcomes in healthcare (83%), interoperability, privacy, regulatory compliance, oversight, and availability issues and their impact on EHR application (56%), and the effect of institutional support and inter-professional collaboration for successful adoption of EHR systems (67%). The findings from this literature review indicated that access to funding and current technologies, institutional support, and inter-professional collaboration were necessary for the successful adoption of EHR systems. The findings imply that privacy, regulatory compliance, and interoperability are essential to consider in EHR systems. By providing healthcare leaders and professionals with this knowledge, there is an opportunity to formulate improved implementation strategies for successful EHR adoption in healthcare settings.
