Abstract:
Background: Thoracopagus conjoined twins are a rare and complex form of conjoined twinning where the twins are joined at the thorax. Clinical Presentation: These twins are typically joined at the chest, sharing vital organs such as the heart, lungs, and major blood vessels. The degree of organ sharing can vary, ranging from partial to extensive, and significantly impacts the clinical management and prognosis.Diagnosis: Diagnosis is often made via prenatal imaging techniques. Postnatal assessment includes detailed imaging and sometimes surgical exploration to evaluate organ sharing and develop a treatment plan.Management and Prognosis: Management of thoracopagus twins involves multidisciplinary care, including neonatologists, surgeons, and cardiologists. Surgical separation, if feasible, is a complex and high-risk procedure that depends on the extent of organ sharing and overall health of the twins. Conclusion: Thoracopagus conjoined twins present unique challenges in terms of diagnosis, management, and surgical intervention. Advances in prenatal imaging and surgical techniques continue to improve outcomes for affected infants.
