Abstract:
Substance abuse and addiction are critical public health concerns in Nigeria, with far-reaching consequences for individuals and society. Traditionally, preventive efforts have focused on adolescents and young adults, often neglecting the importance of early childhood education. However, the early years of life are crucial for cognitive, emotional, and social development, making them an ideal period for intervention. This article explores the potential of integrating substance abuse education into early childhood curricula as a strategy for preventing future addiction in Nigeria. Drawing on empirical studies, including Nigerian-specific research, this study highlights the benefits, challenges, and practical approaches for implementing such programmes in Nigerian educational settings. The findings suggest that early intervention through targeted educational initiatives can significantly influence children's attitudes towards substance use, thereby contributing to a reduction in addiction rates.
