Abstract:
This study investigated the influence of peer pressure and emotional intelligence on academic amotivation among secondary school students in Ibadan North Local Government Area of Oyo State. Adolescence is marked by heightened susceptibility to peer influences, which can significantly impact academic motivation. Emotional intelligence (EI) has emerged as a crucial factor in managing academic pressures and maintaining motivation.A descriptive survey design was employed, involving a sample of 300 students selected through a multi-stage sampling technique. Data were gathered using three validated instruments: the Peer Pressure Inventory (PPI), the Emotional Intelligence Scale (EIS), and the Academic Amotivation Scale (AAS). The study aimed to identify the relationships between peer pressure, emotional intelligence, and academic amotivation. The analysis revealed a significant positive correlation between peer pressure and academic amotivation, indicating that higher peer pressure was associated with increased academic disengagement. In contrast, emotional intelligence was negatively correlated with both peer pressure and academic amotivation, suggesting that students with higher EI were more adept at managing peer influences and maintaining academic motivation. Regression analysis confirmed that peer pressure significantly predicted academic amotivation, while emotional intelligence acted as a mitigating factor.Based on these findings, it is recommended that schools integrate emotional intelligence training into their curricula to help students manage peer pressure and maintain motivation. Additionally, creating supportive peer environments and developing strategies to address peer pressure are crucial. These interventions can enhance students' ability to navigate academic challenges and improve their overall academic performance.
