Abstract:
This study explores the impact of sustainable procurement practices on the promotion of local industries in Tanzania, focusing on three key criteria: Environmental, Social, and Economic. Through a multiple regression analysis, the research identifies Social and Economic Criteria as significant drivers of local industry development. Social Criteria, which include fair labor practices and community engagement, emerge as the most influential, followed by Economic Criteria, highlighting the importance of cost efficiency and support for local suppliers. Conversely, Environmental Criteria show a weak and statistically insignificant impact, suggesting that the current approach to integrating environmental considerations in procurement may not effectively support local industrial growth. The findings stress the need for policymakers and procurement officials to prioritize Social and Economic Criteria to maximize the benefits of sustainable procurement. Additionally, there is a critical need to reassess the role of Environmental Criteria to ensure they contribute positively to the promotion of local industries. The study concludes that while sustainable procurement is a valuable tool for industrial development, a balanced approach that optimizes social and economic benefits while rethinking environmental strategies is essential for achieving sustainable growth in Tanzania's local industries.
