Abstract:
Some previous studies have shown that men with high PSA levels stand higher risk of being diagnosed with prostate cancer, while some other researchers have shown that a patient with high PSA level may not have prostate cancer [1 - 3]. To investigate into this discrepancy, descriptive survey has been conducted in which structured questionnaire was administered by purposive sampling to patience going for prostate cancer screening in various hospitals in Abia, Anambra and Imo states of Nigeria from September 2022 to June, 2023. The questionnaire was structured to provide the demographic data and PSA level of each participant and was retrieved after the screening. The quantitative data obtained were used to determine the statistical association between PSA levels and prostate cancer by Chi-square test at (p < 0.05) level of significance, conducted with SPSS version 29.0. The results obtained show that epidemiology of prostate cancer is not associated with PSA levels of the men: Abia State (p = 0.613); Anambra State (P = 0.169) and Imo State (p = 0.239). The most common symptom of prostate cancer in the screened patients is inability to completely empty the bladder during urination.
