Abstract:
This paper begins investigation on the relationship between the agriculture sector and growth of developing countries. The two proposed economies for evaluation in this study are Republic of Fiji Islands and Republic of Mauritius. The justification for adopting these economies is that both economies experienced preferential trade in sugar provided by European Union, Mauritius being the largest and Fiji second largest beneficiary of the preferential trade. The focus of the study is on the economies of Fiji and Mauritius for the period of 2005-2010. Data for the study were collected through secondary source and a longitudinal comparison research design has been adopted for the paper. In most studies, growth of developing countries has been attributed to transition from agriculture to manufacturing and tertiary sector. This study, however, takes a different approach perceiving for a possible strong association between agriculture sector and success of developing countries. The findings on such follow-on research could be relevant to government policies on agriculture expandability and overall growth of the developing economy.
