Abstract:
The study examined the relationship between stress and coping skills with academic performance of Social Studies in tertiary institutions in Delta State. Six research question were raised and six hypotheses were formulated. This study employed the correlational research design to establish the relationship between the independent variables and dependent variables. The population of study consists of 249. The sample is 249 the researcher used the entire population due to the small size. The instrument used was a questionnaire and student past sessional result. The instrument was validated by experts; the reliability was carried using Pearson product moment correlation coefficient with the coefficient of 0.74. The Research questions was answered using Product Moment Correlation Coefficient. While linear regression and multiple regression analysis will be used to test the hypotheses. These statistical tools will help the researcher to determine the relationship which exists between dependent and independent variables. All hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. The findings are as follows; there is significant relationship between student stress and academic performance of Social Studies students in tertiary institutions; there is significant relationship between coping skill and academic performance of Social Studies students in tertiary institutions; that there is a significant joint relationship among stress, coping skill and academic performance of Social Studies students in tertiary institutions; Based on the findings the following conclusions were drawn, the study concluded that there is negative relationship between stress and academic performance of students.
