Abstract:
Wetlands are vital ecosystems that provide a range of services, including water regulation, carbon sequestration, and biodiversity conservation. This narrative review assesses the ecosystem services provided by Uganda's wetlands, which cover 10-13% of the country's land area. These wetlands support livelihoods through water regulation, flood control, food production, and cultural values. Despite their ecological and economic significance, wetlands in Uganda face challenges such as agricultural encroachment, urbanization, pollution, and climate change. The Ugandan government has introduced policies for wetland conservation, but degradation persists. This review highlights the need for sustainable management and payment for ecosystem services (PES) programs to enhance conservation efforts. Case studies on wetland systems in Uganda emphasize the importance of wetlands for biodiversity, carbon storage, and community livelihoods, and call for improved institutional frameworks and stakeholder collaboration for effective wetland management. Addressing these challenges requires coordinated efforts, stronger policies, and continued research to preserve Uganda's wetlands for future generations.
