Abstract:
This study investigates the prevalence of marital rape in Uganda, its driving factors, and the psychological effects on women. Utilizing a cross-sectional design, data were collected from 384 women through structured questionnaires and interviews. The findings reveal that 62.8% of respondents reported experiencing marital rape, with higher rates observed among women under 40 and those in polygamous relationships. Key drivers identified include male chauvinism, power exertion, and insensitivity to partners' feelings. The psychological impact of marital rape is significant, with a 52.7% increased likelihood of depression among victims. The study concludes that marital rape is a pervasive issue in Uganda, necessitating urgent legislative reforms and increased awareness to protect women's rights and mental health. Recommendations include enhancing legal frameworks, promoting awareness campaigns, and improving access to mental health support for victims.
