Abstract:
The study investigated the effect of teachers' effectiveness and students' attitude towards learning as determinants of students' achievements in science subjects in junior secondary schools in Oluyole Local Government Area of Oyo State. Ex post facto design was adopted with multi-stage sampling technique for selecting 100 students. Students' Perception on Teacher's Effectiveness and Students' Attitude to Learning Scale-SPTESAS (r=0.86) and Achievement Test in Science-ATS (KR_20=0.78) were used. (94%) of the respondents indicated that their teachers motivated them to learn always. There was linear relationship between independent variables (teachers' effectiveness and students' attitude to learning) and students' achievement in science subjects. The variation in students' achievement in science subjects accounted for by teachers' effectiveness and students' attitude to learning is approximately 13.2% and is statistically significant at p < 0.05 level. The analysis of variance of the multiple regression, F(2,98) = 8.508 is also significant at 0.05 Alpha level. Teacher effectiveness ? = .377; t (98) = 4.030; p < .05) only contributed significantly to the prediction model at 0.05 level. It was found that influence of teacher effectiveness and students' attitude to learning had joint significant and predictive influence on student achievement in sciences therefore, teachers should ensure that their effective teaching skills be updated for enhanced students' achievement.
