Abstract:
This study investigated the psychological wellbeing of male and female students at selected private universities in Kampala District, Uganda. As the demands of higher education increase, understanding student wellbeing becomes essential for fostering supportive learning environments. A quantitative cross-sectional study design was implemented, involving 305 undergraduate students (150 male, 155 female) chosen through convenience sampling. Data were gathered using a structured questionnaire that included validated scales for life satisfaction, emotional regulation, and social connectedness. The Independent-Samples T-Test was conducted, revealing that while female students exhibited a higher mean score (M = 57.22) for psychological wellbeing compared to male students (M = 50.81), this difference was not statistically significant (t = -1.590, p = .603). The findings indicate that gender does not significantly influence psychological wellbeing among university students. The study highlights the necessity for gender-neutral mental health services to promote inclusivity and reduce stigma, thereby enhancing the academic environment. Future research should explore additional factors, such as personality traits and social support networks that may impact psychological wellbeing.
