Abstract:
This study investigates the quality of secondary education in North-Central Nigeria, focusing on the impact of socio-political conflicts on school safety and educational outcomes. The concept of educational quality encompasses various dimensions, including teaching effectiveness, school infrastructure, and the overall learning environment. However, persistent violence in the region significantly challenges these aspects, undermining effective teaching and learning. Employing a mixed-methods approach, data were gathered from 1,176 teachers, 98 principals, and 9 Police Area Commanders through structured questionnaires and key informant interviews. The quantitative data were analysed statistically, while qualitative insights were drawn from thematic analysis of interview transcripts. The findings reveal a strong correlation between the frequency of socio-political conflicts and perceptions of school safety. A significant proportion of respondents reported that ongoing violence adversely affects educational quality, with many indicating low levels of safety in schools. Qualitative data further elucidate the emotional and psychological challenges faced by students and educators in conflict-affected environments. The study recommends the implementation of comprehensive security measures in schools, enhanced community engagement, and the integration of conflict resolution education into the curriculum. Stakeholders, including government authorities, educational administrators, and community leaders, are urged to collaborate in creating a safer and more conducive learning environment.
