Abstract:
Castanea mollissima is found in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia, with distribution in Vietnam mainly in the Central Highlands and some southern provinces. In this study, the chemical composition and biological activity of the methanol extract of Castanapsis piriformis leaves distributed in Vietnam were investigated for the first time. Qualitative results showed that the methanol extract from the leaves contained flavonoids, antraglycosides, glycosides, reducing sugars, tannins, sesquiterpen lactones, coumarins and terpenoid-steroids. In terms of biological activity, the extract showed moderate antioxidant activity (EC50 = 78.22 ± 7.50 µg/mL), anticancer activity on four cell lines (KB, HepG2, A549, MCF-7) with IC50 ranging from 32.86 ± 1.83 to 46.17 ± 1.94 µg/mL, and good anti-inflammatory activity (IC50 = 52.65 ± 4.17 µg/mL). In particular, the extract strongly inhibited the ?-glucosidase enzyme (IC50 = 0.57 ± 0.01 µg/mL), superior to the positive control acarbose (IC50 = 198.50 ± 6.25 µg/mL), which suggests potential application in supporting diabetes treatment. The results of this study help demonstrate the potential of Castanopsis piriformis leaves in medicine and food due to their antioxidant, anti- cancer, anti-inflammatory and ?-glucosidase inhibitory activities.
