Abstract:
This study explores gambling and sports betting addiction among the youth of Butembo, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, by analyzing its causes, manifestations, and socio-economic impacts. Using a mixed-methods approach combining quantitative and qualitative methods, it identifies the profiles of young players, their motivations, and the factors influencing their engagement in these activities. The study highlights the role of economic hardship, unemployment, social pressure, and the media's promotion of gambling in the rise of this phenomenon. The results show that the majority of young people minimize the risks of gambling, despite visible negative impacts on the family, economic, and psychosocial levels, such as the deterioration of family relationships, indebtedness, and psychological disorders. By comparing these results with other studies, the analysis reveals striking similarities, while emphasizing specific issues related to Butembo, such as the lack of regulation and the lack of awareness. The study proposes solutions, including awareness campaigns, enhanced psychosocial support, regulatory reforms, and healthy economic alternatives for youth. It also paves the way for future research on the long-term effects of sports betting and the need for a multidisciplinary approach.
