Abstract:
Learning activity sheets (LAS) as prospective intervention materials in improving the non-cognitive skills of disengaged students present immense potential. Premise to that, the present study, as one of the by-products of the extension project conducted by a State University in Bataan, Philippines, assesses the needs of Social Studies (Araling Panlipunan) teachers and students in a public secondary school in developing non-cognitive skill-based learning activity sheets in addressing disengaged behaviors of students. Using the descriptive survey design of quantitative research, the data are gathered from nine Social Studies teachers and eighty students-at-risk who are purposively selected. The primary data-gathering tool used in the study is a researcher-made, validated, and reliability-tested survey questionnaire. The quantitative data gathered from the study are analyzed using descriptive statistics (i.e., mean and standard deviation) and inferential statistics (i.e., Independent Samples t-test). The results demonstrate a consensus among teachers and at-risk students about the urgent need for the University's College of Education to develop non-cognitive skill-based LAS to address student disengagement, fostering a responsive approach and collaboration between basic and higher education through an extension project.
