Abstract:
- This study investigates the influence of family structure on the academic achievement of secondary school students in Ibadan metropolis, Nigeria. It examined how different household types (nuclear, extended, and single-parent), along with varying levels of parental involvement, affect students' academic achievement. The research identified performance patterns associated with specific family backgrounds. A total of 300 students from public and private secondary schools in Ibadan were selected using stratified random sampling techniques to ensure demographic representation. The study employed ex post facto research design, with data collected through structured questionnaires. Quantitative analysis was conducted to explore the relationship between family structure and students' academic achievement. Findings indicate that students from nuclear families reported the highest perceived support, with a mean score of 3.67. Support from extended families ranged from 2.13 to 3.22 (mean = 2.625), while single-parent households averaged 2.591. In terms of parental involvement, the home environment received the highest rating (mean = 3.59), whereas support with homework was the lowest (mean = 1.95). The study highlights the need for context-specific interventions aimed at supporting students from less advantaged family settings. It also calls for further research into cultural and socio-economic factors influencing education within diverse family systems in Nigeria.
