Abstract:
Background: In modern Uganda, traditional age-based authority structures are being increasingly challenged by contemporary realities, including technological advancements and shifting socio-economic dynamics. Understanding the relationship between age, wisdom, and discipline is crucial for recognizing how these changes affect societal perceptions of authority. Main Objective: The primary objective of this study was to interrogate the relationship between age, wisdom, and discipline, examining the relevance of traditional authority structures in contemporary Uganda. Methods: A mixed-methods approach was employed, involving a sample size of 400 participants stratified by age, gender, and socio-economic status. Data were collected through structured questionnaires and in-depth interviews, analyzed using univariate, bivariate, and multivariate statistical methods. Key Results: The results indicated a positive perception of the relationship between age and wisdom, with significant correlations found between age, ethical behavior, and disciplinary capacity. However, younger generations were recognized for their technological competence, challenging traditional views of authority. Socio-economic status and gender also emerged as significant factors influencing perceptions of wisdom and discipline. Conclusion and Recommendation: The study concluded that while traditional age-based authority structures remain relevant, they are increasingly being transformed by modern realities. Recommendations include promoting intergenerational dialogue, integrating technology training for older individuals, and advocating for inclusive policies that recognize diverse forms of knowledge and competence.
