Abstract:
This research analyzed the Nigerian oil and gas sector to establish the relationship between carbon accounting practices and sustainable reports. This research analyzed the environmental sustainability performance of the industry following an improvement as a result of carbon emission disclosure and regulation adherence. Data were collected from the sustainability and annual reports of ten listed oil and gas companies on the Nigerian Exchange Group for the period 2015-2023. Carbon disclosure and regulatory compliance were identified to be positively correlated with environmental sustainability by the results of an ex-post facto study design using Panel Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression. Therefore, companies that are open about their emissions and environmentally compliant would be most likely to succeed in the long run. Researchers concluded that improved carbon accounting practices increases transparency, boosts stakeholder trust and confidence, and inspires individuals to do their part to save the environment. It calls upon businesses to make carbon reporting an integral part of their culture on a regular basis and that the authorities step up monitoring and enforcement to make long-term sustainability possible.
